Getting started in the Dust Front RTS demo

The developer published three tips with the demo, and they are not filler — each one names a way people lose. Here they are, with what the game files say behind them.

When the demo launched on 15 June 2026 the developer wrote three lines of advice. They are worth reading before anything else, because each one is really a warning.

The first sets the scale: “This game isn’t about squads, it’s about battalions.” He goes on: “Companies of tanks and the thunder of artillery. Build lots of units and lead them into battle. But whether you want to trade armies or fight with elite veterans, that decision is up to you.” If you are arriving from an RTS where five units is an army, this is the adjustment to make first.

The infantry model backs him up. A squad’s damage does not fall as its men die, so a battered battalion still hits like a fresh one — the details are on our infantry page. Numbers are not punished here the way they are elsewhere.

The second tip is blunter: “Economy is everything. If you’re short on resources, move your base, develop a passive economy, and set production to run continuously.” Note “move your base” — the Empire’s mobile construction vehicle exists for exactly this, and at 1 000 minerals it is the most expensive thing the faction fields. Relocating is a designed answer, not an act of desperation.

The third is the one that catches people who are winning: “Control the frontline. If you’re holding too narrow a front, the enemy can easily strike you with their entire army, and your resources may run out before you can benefit from a passive economy.” A narrow front sounds safe. It concentrates the enemy instead, and it starves the economy the second tip told you to build.

Two practical notes from the files. Across all factions, the building catalogue records 1 340 energy production and 3 020 consumption. Those aggregate totals are not the energy balance of a playable base. And population is a ceiling raised by buildings, not something you spend: ten buildings raise it, from 20 for a barn up to 90 for the large one.

One last thing that is easy to miss. The demo has “a basic tutorial that you can go through and always check the basic mechanics.” The developer says plainly that he would rather you discover the rest yourself, so the tutorial is deliberately short. Everything it leaves out is what the rest of this site is for.
